The performances of the symphonic poem "The execution of Stepan Razin" and the violin concerto No.2 (with David Oistrakh) are also of first rate and truly memorable. The recorded sound is the typical "Melodiya stereo" of the period, although it is quite acceptable and much better than the Mravinsky box-set of Shostakovich Symphonies Nos. /5(11).

Shostakovich had the great good fortune to write for Russia’s finest soloists, who also happened to be the among world’s best. David Oistrakh remade the First Violin Concerto with the composer’s son on the podium (EMI), but he never bettered this singularly intense performance from , captured in excellent mono sound.

Kondrashin knew Shostakovich personally and conducted the premieres of the Fourth Symphony (composed in but not publicly performed until ), the Thirteenth Symphony () as well as the Second Violin Concerto (). The Fifteenth Symphony () was not premiered by him; this version was recorded in /5(2).
